Top 10 mistakes that Coach Dre made to “lose” his abs

Health professionals too often forget their purpose is to help their customers get healthy and often times preach from their pedestals.

They preach from their pulpit of the tabernacle of Healthier Than Thou. They publish only the news of their very sweatiest workouts or their mirror self portrait when the lighting was just right to show that top abdominal fiber.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the spoils of living an active lifestyle and eating according to our design. I just think that we sometimes portray an image of being so far beyond reproach, as if we never fall off, miss a workout, and only drink the highest quality breast milk. NOT!

That’s why it was so refreshing to read the following post from the Ab Monster himself, Coach Dre admitting his missteps, forgiving himself, then getting back on the wagon.

Here are Coach Dre’s top 10 reasons for screwing up  his  abs over the last 4 weeks:

  1. Taking my health and fitness for granted
  2. Not doing food prep at least once a week
  3. Not taking food to the office aka freestyle eating
  4. Going out to lunch with clients every day
  5. Had a few drinks with while watching the Tour De France (duh the Tour is 3 weeks)
  6. Ordering a lot of takeout food
  7. I even had junk food, my favorite  chick-fil-a
  8. Not measuring my girth and weight at least every other week
  9. Not having a plan for when my schedule is f*ing up, and
  10. Ignoring the fact that I should plan alternate workout times because of my busy life (I do have 2 kids you know)

One more thing, I even caught a cold! This is the first time in a year that I can remember getting a cold. Eff crappy food. One more reason to eat great food and exercise and join the Eating For Abs Movement.

The good news, these mistakes are all in the past and I am back on track starting NOW.

Coach Be’s 10 Day Challenge #1 – Track and WIN

Hey folks,

I recently left the country for a week but it was important to me that I left my 1-on-1 students something to work toward in my absence.  So I penned this 10 day challenge for them, and YOU at the phase you are now in the E4A curriculum will benefit from this as well.

Step 1 – Read through it thoroughly

Step 2 – Create some sort of score keeping device (paper / spreadsheet / mobile device) that will last 10 days.

Step 3 – Prepare.  Head to the cabinets and see what you have and what you need.

Step 4 – Commit to a start date in the next 72 hours.

Step 5 – Execute and report in.  Let us know how you are doing.

Keep score and work to tackle this challenge and every measurement we track will move in your favor!
Keep a tally of each item over the next 10 days and submit once time is up.

For success, you MUST track every day.

Coach Be’s 10 Day Challenge:

30 servings of whole protein including:

  • 3 Omega-3 eggs
  • a grilled palm sized portion of chicken, fish, whole turkey, tofu or steak (not ground)
  • 3/4 cup of beans or legumes

5 – 25g protein shakes

20L of water, including unsweetened green tea or black coffee

30 handful size servings of:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Asparagus

4 – 10 round HIIT sprint workouts:
30 seconds work / 30 seconds rest
If treadmill: incline 2+. Run speed 8.5+ mph minimum. Run for 30s hop off for 30s. Repeat 10 times.

That’s it!!!

“What to Expect!” – Impressions from Eating For Abs Students and Alumni

People considering joining the Eating For Abs community have all kinds of questions.

“What’s next?  How fast will I drop size? Is it hard? Where is my meal plan?”

We’ve heard it ALL!

Since we unveil each progression of the program slowly (think old school burlesque shows), often people build up an expectation of what the program is in their minds.  Unfortunately if the reality of the class doesn’t match the movie in their heads, people are less likely to stay engaged consistent enough for the magic to happen.

SO, we had the bright idea to ask existing E4A students and Alumni to help set expectations for newbies.

Without giving away the keys to the kingdom, we’d like your help setting real expectations.

Is your social network making you fat?

I want you to watch this video below from Dr. Nicholas Christakis,  he is a pioneer in the field of health and social networks.   In this video he demonstrates how the way you look and feel i.e. your physique, happiness, and mood is strongly affected by your social network.  Grab a glass of water and be amazed at how those people around you can affect your life.  What was amazing to me is how the friends of your friends even have an impact on your life, in essence if your social network sucks more than likely you will probably suck also.  Well, at least a little bit or a lot of suck.

Let’s take a glimpse into my social network an how it affects me my mood and health.   One of the things I like about Eating For Abs is that whenever  the team gets together to work on a project it usually ends up with us heading out to do some crazy activity afterwards.   It could be hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Maryland,  or going to a Crossfit gym to see who can handle the pain.    The list goes on and on.   We may shift gears and talk about great food  and recipes that promote great health.     I also spend at least 1 day a week ( I would prefer more days, but alas I have to coach soccer and  do my list of honey do chores) hanging out with my Cycling team, the Spartans.

We tend to joke a lot and spend time discussing cycling, cycling fitness, cycling gear, cycling tweaks, cycling races on TV, and more cycling.   Think of Bubba Gump talking about shrimp and that will give you an idea of how much we talk about cycling.   Needless to say, I come away from these meetups rejuvinated all the while getting the snot kicked out of me by these guys on their bikes.   Can you tell that I really like spending time with my built in social network?   As we talk with clients we realize that they really may not have the level of support in their socail network that promotes a healthy and active lifestyle.  With that said, I want you to take some time to really watch and listens to Dr. Christakis.  Think about the impact your social network has on your fat loss and fitness journey and how you can start to change that.   After you watch the video,please leave a comment below in the comment section to let us know that you are alive.  You can say Hi Coach, Great Article Coach, or that makes sense Coach Dre, but let us know you are alive.

Do, you want to maximize your fat loss potential? Of COURSE you do!

Well first of all, you’ll want to secure your plate, freeing it from progress inhibiting crap and loading it with high performance body fuel. If you have any questions about that I HIGHLY recommend joining The ULTIMATE Nutrition Course.

After that you’ll want to increase the intensity of your activity including resistance training 3-4 days a week. And for some REAL extra credit, ditch your long, slow going cardio for something with a little more kick.

Are you cheating on us?

Now that I have your attention from the title, I have something very important to discuss.    I have received a few questions about cravings, cheat meals and what do you do about it.  Well, take a minute to listen to my take on handling cheat meals below.

You don’t have to be 100% compliant to have the body you want. You just want to be in the 90% range of compliance.   Sometimes if you have a craving it is best to eat what you are craving and get back on track. You don’t want to get to the point that you keep depriving yourself and have a huge melt down. The key points are:

  • Eat nutritious/healthy  90% of the time.
  • Don’t replace nutritious/healthy  food with cheat meals.  Eat cheat meals after you have had your nutritious/healthy meal
  • Don’t starve yourself before you go to an event that you know you will have a cheat meal
  • If you are having cheat meals and your measurements are still not trending down, then you will need to cut back on cheat meals
